    Spiral & helical Staircases

The design, manufacture & installation of our Spiral & Helical Staircase products form our Urban Helical & Spiral Range.

These staircases are a considerable part of the modern staircase marketplace, & have become so especially during the last decade or so. The bespoke service we offer, includes Design, Supply & Installation of staircases for both prestige commercial & residential projects. The staircase is designed by our ‘in-house ‘ Design Engineers, & can provide a focal design point in a construction project. Spiral & Helical staircases are similar & tend to be utilised in many projects where innovative design is paramount. In essence, a Helical Stair has an inner & outer string; a Spiral stair has a central column. Both types of stairs can have inner & outer handrails, but both have external balustrade. ( Helical Staircases generally have inner AND external balustrades ).

Photographs are included showing both types of stair & we can discuss in detail your requirements when selecting a design & type.

In many instances, the Architect/Client will provide a rudimentary drawing for the Staircase. Helical/Spiral Staircases are suitable for use in both internal &
external applications. Design calculations & drawings would be part of our brief & we would expect to submit these to both the project Architect & Main Contractor ( & possibly the client ) at an early stage. All types of Spiral/Helical states comply with BS 5395: Part 2, 1984 ( spiral & helical staircases ) & Building Regulations : Approved Document K.

Galvanising may be utilised for corrosion resistance where the staircase is used externally; but even then the final finish may be a painted one (over the galvanising ). The balustrades would be either galvanised & polyester coated ( for external use ) or possibly manufactured in stainless steel or other nonferrous material.
The detailed staircase specification would have to be formulated taking cost into consideration.

Spiral Staircases are used for Fire Escapes, as they provide a major space saving solution over straight flight staircases.

Spiral staircase main string design

Main string design

In the design of these types of Staircases, strings can be flat bar, beam, or even a central tubular spine. The ‘ sky’s the limit ‘ with design, & exotic applications can considered the norm !!!! Helical Staircases can be designed in an ‘ elliptical ‘ shape ………..this results in challenging manufacturing techniques but innovative design……….

Spiral staircase tread design

Tread design

Commonly treads are made from folded ‘ pans ‘, this is a tray which can take a variety of finishes from timber, mosaic ,tiles, marble .........etc.. In some instances, only a tread support is provided which enables timber tread utilisation. Note : in the modern day, it is a mandatory building control requirement to incorporate ‘ closed risers ‘ in treads. Closed risers can be incorporated as part of the tread or a glass riser included……………

Spiral balustrade and handrail design

balustrade & handrail design

Helical/Spiral Staircase balustrades/handrails are in many cases designed to provide guarding as both a feature & edge protection for both adults & children.
This can be carried out by utilising different types of infill. Glass, perforated sheet, vertical round bar, etc., are just some of the types used quite commonly..........in real terms budget is a major influencing factor.

Spiral stair locating building interfaces

stair locating & building interfaces

Spiral /Helical Staircases are often designed to be free standing, however normally it is possible to design a first fix item into the main building slab or steel for connection purposes. When carried out externally, attention will be paid to waterproofing.

Method Statements

A series of Method statements will be provided & submitted for approval of the Feature Staircase installation.

documents & traceability

Our fabrication personnel are included in a Welding Quality Management system which is audited & regularly approved by the CE approved inspectorate.

Welders are constantly monitored for the level of approval for which they are tested & in accordance with the relevant practice are retested when necessary.( Third party witnessing is mandatory ). Documents are included within a Staircase sign off wallet, & together with drawings ( As Built ), materials

FAQ's

What will the timescale be for the manufacture & installation of my Staircase?

We will provide from the outset & order placement, a detailed programme of the key stages from design & drawing production through to fabrication, inspection, galvanising/finishing ( if required ) & installation. This programme, we will sign up to with the client & professional team. Staircase timescales can be notoriously long ............as a rule of thumb a three month duration would be the maximum. ( although Spiral Staircases, with a central column are historically quicker to design & install ).

How much will my staircase cost?

A detailed quotation will be provided to enable you to know how much you’re spending, & us to know our costing process. The order you place will reference this document.

can i see my staircase being made?

We would expect you to, & will invite you to join us during & prior to final sign-off.

How soon will I see my Staircase drawings including a 3D render?

Within a four week period we will submit a General Assembly & details ( if required ) a week later. Depending on the size & complexity of the stair, this could run to maybe six weeks.

Will one person be allocated to oversee the Contract?

Yes.............he is the Contracts Manager & will be in constant liaison throughout the Contract.

I’d like to see samples of the stair string, final paint finish & balustrade. Could you provide them?

No problem, this is expected…………..the level of sample production will be FULLY agreed at the prestart meeting. Prior to full manufacture we would expect to have the control samples fully approved.
